                                 9TH CHEMICAL COMPANY

                                        OVERVIEW

The 9TH Chemical Detachment provided point biological
and stand-off chemical detection catabilitiei; using the XM2
biological sampler and the XM 21 chemical detector. The
detachment was attached to the Foreign Materiel Intelligence
Battalion (FMIB) for operations, rations, administrative
            training, UCMJ, personnel and logistical support.            Th;
Detachment was attached to FMIB due to similar-inissions to
collect chemical and biological samtles. FMIB had already
established the procedures for he evacuation of samples
from the KTO to CONUS laboratories for detailed analysis.
The Detachment consisted of an eight man head uarters
section, seven biolo ical detection teams anq five
            chemical/biological de?ection teams.
The Headquarters element provided all the detachments
logistical, administrative and maintenance support. The
detachment headquarters was based with the--Battalion
operations section. An additional head uarters element
deployed forward to further expedite logistical support to
            th@ t&ams just prior to G-Day.
Each Biological detection team consisted of a team
chief and two biological detection NCO'S. Three of the teams
had XM2 biological detectors and the remaining four teams
had the PM-10 commercial samplers. The PM-10's were deployed
to the units covering Riyadh-and Dhahran due to its awkward
            size and shape.
The five chemical/bioloqical detection teams consisted
ection NCO'S.
Although biological detection'was tfie primary mission, both
systems were de@loyed simultaneously prbvidin4 dual mission
            coverage.
Two captains from CRDEC, Edgewood Arsenal, MD were also
attached to the Battalion to provide mission planning. They
provided assistance with.lo4istics and technical expertise
in the conduct of our missions.

                                                                         DECLASSIFIED
