MI STORY
(u) When alerted for deployment 9th Chemical Company
and the 9th Infantry Divii;ion was in transition. It was
downsizing and inactivating prior to the alert/deployment. A
single motorized infantry brigade similar to an ACR will
replace the Division. The Briqad6 will be reorganized and be
redesignated the 199th SeEardte Infantr Brigade (SIB). The
9th Ch@mical Company will e the chemicay asset for the SIB.
(U The 9th Chemical company was alerted on 12 Jan 91,
rior @o downsizing and all NCO's within the company were
Designated tp d2pl§y, additionally several NCO'T from
throughout tne uivision and Cor s were assigned to the 9th
Chemical Company to fill any shortages.
The detachment received orders to detloy to
Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD., to undergo extensive raining
in the use and employment on the XM-2 Biological Sampler.
The classes were broken into two trainin? phases due to the
shortage of detachment soldiers. The firs class arrived on
15 Jan 91 and consisted of 30 soldiers. In addition, the
soldiers from the first serial were trained on the XM-21
Chemical Detector. These soldiers in the grade E-6 and above
were designated as the Chemical Biological teams. They
finished and returned to FT. Lewis on 18 Jan 91. The second
group arrived on 19 Jan 91 consisting of 30 soldiers. They
received instruction only on the XM-2 Biological Sam ler.

This three day class covered all operational- and mission
oriented information for the teams, They returned to FT.
Lewis on 21 Jan 91. Due to mission requirements and
operational needs only 16 of those 30 personnel from the
second increment were deployed.
Group one consisting of 29 soldiers deployed on
the 26 JAN 1991 via McChord AFB, WA. McGuire AFB MD.
Sargosa, @p@in and then to Daharan Airbase, Saudi Ar@bia.
The remaining 16 soldiers deployed on 2 FEB 1991 using the
same route. Once on site the detachment was initially housed
in Khobar Towers. A timeline was devised of breakin -out all
the equipment along with deployment times for each Zeam. On
29 Jan 91, previously shipr@d CRDEC equipment was located at
the Daharan International irbase. On 30 Jan 91 detachment
soldiers with vehicles off-loaded 7 pallets and evacuated
them to FMIB Headquarters. On 31 Jan 91, all equipment was
distributed to the teams for uploading. On 1 Feb 91, 5
Chemical/Biological Teams deployed to Jubail, Ras Safania,
Riyahd, KKMC, and one remained with
FMIB.
