           SUBJECT: Battle Dress Overgarment (BDO) (U)


           I. (U) Purpose. Provide information on BDO for OP6'r'ation
           Desert Shield.


           2. (U) Facts.

              a. (U) US Army Chemical Research, Development and
           Engineering Center (CRDEC) live agent testing of the BOO has
           confirmed a shel+-Ii+e extension to 7 years, with an additional
           eighth year granted +or BDO ma-@e under Winfield Contracts DLA
           100-aS-C-0556 and 84-C-0389.

              b. (U) Protection against liquid agents remains at 22 days
           wear time with a 24 hour capabi lity as,long as the suit is
           servicable and uncontaminated. The wear time may be extended to
           30 days, based on a commander's risk assessment.






           Commanders should make decisions regarding attire under the BDU's
           (i.e., underwear vs. DCU'S) to balance the idded protection
           gained and minimal heat gain.

              d. (U) BDO coded "C-unserviceable" are currently being
           pushed into the AO for training use. BDO will be out of their
           individual package and shipped in containers marked with red
           paint. Units will mark BDO as a training item. Units will not
           use contingency BDO for training.

             e. (U) Desert camouflage pattern SDO have been contracted
           for and will be available starting in Dec 90. Corps 64 will
           submit bulk requisitions. Desert BDO will become the primary set
           in the event of war.

             f. (U) Contingency BDO will not be taken out of the
           protective package. If the bag breaks or is punctured, inspect
           contents for damage, squeeze out excess air and reseal package.
