             SUBJECT: Chemical Protect@ve,Fi-4teA'Damage


             1. During the period of 20-1-23 January 1991, elements of     your
             Brigade worked to contain an oil pipeline rupture at P4 f4rj6'll@0.
             While working in this area the soldiers were exppaea.,io ii rogen
             sulfide fumes.   Hydrogen sulfide is k.nol@n@to cause serioull@damage
             to chemical protective filters.

             2.  While the ei4ui    nt  eceseary, to,@ determine the exact
                                PrAe   n
             'concentration of hydrogen oulfide'waa hot availabl       reports  from
             @the rupture site indicate  a@ilkvel of 20-150 ppm.. ,%a active-
             carbon filters in stand@8 c@'hqmica.1 protective masks are not
             effective protection from the@haz@rd-s@bf hydrogen sulfide. The
             filters becom  a saturated, and@oilell little or n6,ppotection.
             The f,ilters &@e'also permanently damaged, making them less
             effective against future chemical agent exposure.
             3. Ag'a precaution, recommen,d"advising your elements working in
             the area exchange the filters   'in their masks. This will
             eliminate any damalge,,caused by the'hyd7-ogen sulfide, and ensure
             that s6ldfera are af  forded full protection.
