     MEMORANDUM FOR SEE DISTRIBUTION

     SUBJECT: NBC Training

     1. Iraqi forces possess an unprecedented capability to conduct
c@emical warfare (CW). They have used this capability
successfully against Iran as well as segments of their own
population. The potential CW threat to XVIII Airborne Corps and
     subordinate units is significant.

     2. To ensure mission'accomplishment under a variety a+ NBC
conditions and to enhance the deterrent posture of Corps forces,
repetitive training on individual and collective chemical tasks
will be candactecf. Initially, training should -Focus on ensuring
all Oredeplo'yment actions regarding maintenance, upload and
issue of chemical7defense equipment (CDE) were properly
     accomplished.

     3. Follow on training should orient on essential survival
skills, particularly warning, masking, decontamination, self
aid, and buddy aid. Collective tasks involving detection,
monitoring, hasty decontamination and MOPP gear exchange also
require reinforcement training. Additionally, unit SOPs should
be reviewed to ensure adequate NBC guidance exists concerning
operations in the current area of responsibility.

     4. Lastly, operations in the harsh desert environment can have
an adverse effect on the protective mask if routine maintenance,
supervised by section/sqLtad leaders, is not aggressively pursued
and conducted. Execution of the basic actions outlined in this
memorandum will help ensure our soliers and units remain
prepared to survive, fight and win in an NBC environment.

     5. POC is LTC Barbeau, Corps Chemical Section.
