SUBJECT: Desert Shield After Action Report

          6. EOD Tools and Equipment:

EOD tools like the Mechanical Impact Wrench are antiquated
and obsolete for the modern battlefield. The 50 caliber Dearmer
is adequate until new technology replaces it. The Air
Compressor takes up valuable space and does not provide any
valuable service. The field Maintenance kit for each team would
be a waste of space because we don't have the storage space.
What would each team do with 6 fire extinguishers.

          7. Rifle Disruption:

We utilized the available M16Al as rifle disruption, with
varying results but mainly poor penetration. This caused more
work because of cleanup after a low order or just breaking the
item apart. The use of a higher caliber bullet would cause
different reactions. There was no effective training for the
Barrett, we received our Barrett as we were preparing to leave
          country.

          B. Mission Support:

              a. Our unit was located at Log Base Bastogne initially then
moved to King Khalid Military City (KKMC). We supported the
101st AASLT forward Brigade at Bastogne then the 3rd Armored
Calvary Regiment at Bastogne then KKMC. We moved to the forward
staging area with the 3rd ACR then were detached due to support
conflicts. They wanted us to separate and provide support to
the Armored columns that would be bypassing ordnance. We then
supported the 171st Corps Support Group in support of the 24th
ID (Mech). We dealt directly with the 24th ID and assisted the
14th EOD during the ground offensive and the return to Saudi
Arabia. We returned to KKMC and supported the 22nd SUPCOM with
ammunition destruction and support of KKMC.

              b. The EOD structure for Desert Shield was one Control and
10 units. We were one of those units assigned to Logbase
Bastogne. The EOD structure for Desert Storm was a Group with 3
Controls and 24 units. We were assigned to the 543rd Control
          supporting the 18th Abn Corps.

               C. The type of incidents varied widely with the units we
supported. Logbase Bastogne incidents were vehicle related
fires (HMMWV and Bradley Fighting Vehicle), helicopter crash
AH1, range work clearing missiles and projectiles, and
accidental discharges (AT-4). The incidents with 3rd ACR were
vehicle related; HEMMT loaded with 155mm basic load caught fire,
helicopter crash, and clearing firing range of projectiles. The
incidents with 24th ID were maiily clearing work and maneuver
areas of submunitions and projectiles or burned enemy vehicles
with ammunition scattered. The return to KKMC after the ground
offensive provided many brought to unit and amnesty type
turn-ins. We also assisted in code H ammunition destruction
          with 3 ACR'S.
