Subject: POST BATTLE RADIATION HAZARDS DEPLETED URANIUM
Unit: VII CORPS
Parent Organization: ARCENT
Box ID: BX000262
Folder Title: PERSONNEL
Document Number: 64
Folder Seq #: 19
ISSUE: Post-battle radiation hazards
DISCUSSION:
Depleted uranium can'cause battlefield and equipment contamination.
Many soldiers and leaders did not recognize the hazard and put
themselves at risk by crawling over shot up or burned up tanks.
I
Enemy equipment can have gages and other items which contain
radiation.
Units do not have capability of checking fo"r alpha radiation at
brigade level. As a result, they unnecessarily expose their soldiers
to radiation risks.
RECOMMENDATION: Plan for radiation contaminated battlefield.
Provide direct reading radiation instrumentation at Bde level.
