            SUBJECT: Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) Kits


            1. Reference VIT Corps memorandum, AETSBA, dated 31 Mar 91,
            subject: Operations in Desert Heat with enclosure, subject:
            Leaders
            Preventive medicine measures against heat 3.nJLtries (extracted
            from
            FM 21-10, Nov 88, pp 37-43)

            2. Request you survey units to Battalion level to determine
            availability of WBGT kits (NSN 6665-00-159-2218). Report results
            to Corps Surgeon'% Office, 332d Medical Brigade, MAJ Stykes,
            9-709-
            7710-442 or 7725-433.


            3. The WBGT index is derived by combining three termperaturesl
            wet
            bulb temp, black globe temp, and shaded dry bulb temn
            (enclosure).
            Application of the index -For leaders should be viewed as a tool
            to
            assist in protection of the force against heat inJLtrv. Leaders
            are
            best served by using good judgment and common sense when
            conducting
            training in heat and sunny conditions. WHEN IN DOUBT IT IS
            BETTER
            TO ERR ON THE SIDE OF SOLDIER SAFETY.
