(.3) '-'--Air Tra'@fi6 "'Contio'v. '.'--Trad'iti'onal flight
following/in@'o--nation services were not available to aircrews
during this phase of operations. Souadron f light operations
provided Svecial Instruction ( LN70TAM) information. Radio flight
following capabilities were degraded by ranges and flight
altitudes involved. Post m,-shap (Class C - Air) actions 24
Dec@er were ha.-nr)ered by lack of radio communication. Luckily,
the crew involved was uninjured and able to walk back to the unit
assembly area to rooor@, the mishap. A similar problem. occurred
after t,,ic Class C air mishap 27 February. In both accidents,
serviceable PRC-90 radios were unsuccessfully used to request
assistance.
(4) Crew Endurance. Quantity and quality of crew rest was
determined by the tactical situation. Air crews occasionally
pulled auard duty and thus reduced the amount of rest time
available. Overall, sufficient ti.-.ie for sleep (sunset till- stand
to) was available to a4.rcrcws. In sorie cases, quality of rest
was degraded by sleeping arrangements established at trooo level.
(5) Fire Prevention. Tent stove oderat,-on and buz&ing of
trash/hu,.r.an waste resulted in several incidents in assembly
areas. Detailed &Irai-,-ng on waste burning wr-s iot coiduc-6ed
until arrival in theater. Underestimating the potential ;-azard
of MOGAS and diesel fuel caused one serious injury. The
y cans, food containers, etc)
in trash fires also caused injury.
(6) An@-nuni-@ion/Pyrotechnac ilandlinc. This --ooic received a
high degree of coma,-id emphas;s and TM Procedures were followed
when possible. Availab-lity of shorting clids, grounda-.na rods
and pallets made full compliance with regu
-nations imp@ssib'--c
during aircraft down loading at user level. Observation of so,-..e
standard precautions (ie., don't walk in front of loaded ac@@t,
carry one rocket at a time, rcenove watches, etc) appeared to
decrease as exoosure to ammunition increased.
(7) Vehicle Operations. Driver co.@,nittment to PMCS and
general operating precautions generally increased with the length
of the operation. Instances of driving too fast for conditions
and not wcaring seatbeits were however, noted during routine
operations. When questioned, several soldiers stated that
seatbelts would hinder egress in the event of an ene.,ny attack.
(8) Sports injuries. The number of injuries in this
category declined after the deployment K)hase. A reduction ii the
intensity and frequency of soorts activity was the primary factor
for reduced injury. A lack of personal hygiene facilities also
discouraged sports activity during this phase.
