MEMORANDUM FOR: Commanding General, 332d Medical Brigade
FROM: Commander, 14th Preventive Medicine Detachment
SUBJECT: Arthropod-Borne Diseases
1. Historically, Arthropod-Borne diseases have resulted in a signifi-
cantly higher percentage of casualties among military personnel than.
have weapons of war.
2. Within the current theater of operation, there is the potential for a
number of Arthropod-Borne diseases. Included are malaria, sandfly fever,
leishmaniasis, and others.
3. In addition to disease factors, the effectiveness of the military is
negatively impacted due to discomfort associated with biting insects.
4. The Department of Defense has developed an effective insect repellent
system which, when properly administered,- provides a very high level of
protection of personnel.
a. Insect/Arthropod Repellent Lotion, 2 oz (NSN: 6840-01-284-3982)
(advice code 2B) is applied to the exposed skin. It is considered to be
;he most effective personal repellent available, commercial or other wise.
b. Permethrin Arthropod Repellent, 6 oz spray (NSN: 6840-01-278-
1356) is applied to uniforms and bed netting. It is a persistent agent
which will remain effective through five washings.
S. Recommend high level priority concerning immediate acquisition and
distribution of these items to theater personnel. Arthropod-Borne
disease will become increasingly important as temperatures increase.
6. Personnel of the 14th Preventive Medicine Detachment are available for
instruction in proper application of these products.
7. POC: LTC Steven L. Jensen, MS, 14th Preventive Medicine Detachment.
