             MEMORANDUM FOR SEE DISTRIBUTION

             SUBJECT: Use ol Insecticides in 2d COSCOM Units


             1.    Commanders are    reminded that the use        of unapproved
             insecticides in and around troop living areas is strongly
             discouraged.   Malathion, parathion, and many locally procured
             insecticides are carbamate or organophospha+.e compounds. These
             compounds kill insects by the same mechanism that causes human
             injury from chemical warfare nerve agents. Soldiers who have had
             enough exposure -o these insecticides may die or put themselves
             at increased risk of severe injury or death after nerve agent
             exposure.

             2. Unit preventive medicine personnel/field sanitation teams are
             qualified to safely handle and use insecticides. They should be
             consulted when insecticide use is contemplated. VII Corps POC is
             CW3 Ginnett, TASS 7720-442.
