                       1. ISSUE: The 89th Chemical Co. requires seperate smoke and
                       decontamination platoons .

                       2. DISCUSION: The dual purpose platoon concept was proven
                       inadequate to SUPPOTT the needs of the Regiment. While smoke
                       was not used in the short lived ground action of Desert
                       Storm, had it been necessary, it would have been dificult to
                       provide. The dual purpose platoon strength was supplemented
                       with additional personnel (19Ds), which allowed the
                       formation of a separate decontamination platoon. This would
                       have allowed for the eventuality of a simultaneous smoke and
                       decontamination Platoon. The Regiment is currently only one
                       M12 Decon Apparatus in the smoke/decontamination platoon.
                       This in itself would allow only very limited hasty
                       decontamination. The regiment will either be forced to
                       depend on corps level decontamination assets, develop sound
                       unit level decontamination plans, or the decontamination
                       platoon will have to be allocated additional personnel and
                       equipment.

                       3. RECOMMENDATION: Submit MTOE change for deletion of dual
                       purpose platoon and addition of separate smoke and decon
                       platoon.
