  SUB,TECT: Chronological Summary of Events

  1. Desert Shield, 8 November 1990 - 16 January 1991.

       a. Predeployment Activities.

             (1) The Ist Infantry Division (Mechanized) was
  alerted for operation Desert Shield while participating in
  the III Corps Command Post Exercise PHANTOM SCIMITAR II at
  Fort Hood, Texas on 8 November 1990. Planning for the
  eventual deployment had actually begun in August as soon as
  the first US units had been alerted. Plans for painting
  vehicles, issuing equipment (including major end-itemr),  and
  deploying the Division were well advanced by the time the
  actual notification was received. Fine-tuning of deployment
  schedules and unit briefings began immediately upon the
  return of the Division key personnel to Fort Riley.

             (2) The Commanding General and Chieff G-3 Plans
  conducted an initial coordination visit to Saudi Arabia
  during the second week of November. The G-3 Deployment
  Planner conducted a liaison visit to HQ, FORSCOM, FT
  McPherson, GA 17 November to 21 November 1990 to adjust  the
  lst ID (M) TPFDL and tailor it to the Division's
  requirements. The Division's Advanced LNO team departed   Fort
  Riley, Kansas on 27 November 1990 to conduct initial liaison
  and reconnaissance. The team consisted of the G-5t
  Interpreter, DMMC General Services Officer and a G-3 Tactical
  Plans Officer. Throughout the month of November the pace of
  preparations accelerated. Units fired gunnery and conducted
  training on the MlAl Abrams main battle tank to prepare for
  potential issue of the more advanced tank upon arrival in
  Saudi Arabia.

        (3) Early in December the Division deployed the DISCOM
  Forward advanced party to lay the logistic ground-work for
  the arrival of the Division in South-West Asia. The first
  detailed reconnaissance of TAA ROOSEVELT was conducted on 10
  December 1990. The next advanced party, DANGER Forward
  continued to prepare for deployment during the first two
