clearance from the Saudis. Trucks are already up loaded with
Class V for TSA 5, the theatre prepositioned storage site
between KKMC and Riyadh. Assets are wasted while time is
lost awaiting clearance. Troops on leave are delayed in
efforts to return by military airlift. Troops are directed
to fly from Philadelphia on the regular shuttle flights.
6 June - It is a continual struggle to provide personnel for
convoy escort. We are simply too short handed.
7 June - Routine operations.
8 June - Routine operations.
9 June - Routine operations.
10 June - Cmd and staff mtg. Commitment for 100 trucks for
MTMC. One convoy delivers cargo to the wrong location due to
drivers having been provided the wrong strip map. Convoy
will rest overnight at TSA 5, and then proceed to the correct
location. Progress continues on Department of the Army
Materiel Movement System - Redesign (DAMMS-R) installation.
This is a computerized system developed for the civilian
trucking industry in the United States which the Army is
experimenting with in Saudi Arabia. Our Bn has been selected
to be the test case.
11 June - Routine operations. Bn Cdr, 14AJ Roll departs on
leave. Bn XO, MAJ Kern, assumes temporary command of the
battalion. 7th Gp Cdr, COL Brown, and MAJ Kern brief ACG
Trans, BG Whaley, on plans for the battalion. BG Whaley
directs that replacements for the 1103 Trans Bn, which is
redeploying, will be assigned the to 702nd.
12 June - Drivers permitted to proceed to TSA 5 without
escort by III Ord Gp. Dark of the moon.
13 June - Hajj begins. Weather noticeably warmer. DAMMS-R
personnel at KKMC to train our personnel there in the new
system. Feathers are ruffled due to resistance to change on
the part of some of our people. Computers? What's wrong
with goose quill pens and parchment ledgers?
14 June - Flag Day and the Army's birthday. The occasion is
celebrated with a picnic and the cutting of a traditional
cake. For over 216 years the United States Army has stood in
defense of American Liberty. A lot of people feel that we
have given liberty a chance to grow and flourish beyond our
shores. This year we lived up to our best as a nation.
15 June - The Army is testing a new HET. Concern is raised
that it may be too small for the MIAL with mine roller
attached, HETs and lowboys move to temporary motor pool off
the port. Bn strength: 76 soldiers. Assets available: 814
