to consist of 18 soldiers. Heat category is 5 at mid
afternoon. Work must go on. Stevedores of the 24th Trans Bn
loading LASH barges keep working by taking frequent rests in
the heat. They are hardworking folks!

28 June - Bn XO, operations officer, CW2 Harville, and
operations NCO, SSG Thompson, attend meeting on ammunition
movements at 49 MC Bn. Emphasis is upon the problems
associated with convoy control due to use of civilian
drivers. Saudis are tightening control on ammo movement.
The argument on who will escort ammunition convoys continues
with every one saying they do not have the personnel.

29 June - COL Chase, Cdr, Ill Ord Gp, visits the Bn to confer
with Bn Car on ammunition movements by the Bn. Plan for
providing personnel fill for the Bn is presented to COL
Brown, 7th Gp Cdr. Bn cdr issues warning order to the S3 to
prepare to escort convoys of especially sensitive ammunition
such as Patriot and Stinger missiles. The battalion does
have a limited escort capability, however other areas such as
vehicle inspection may suffer. We can't afford that yet we
cannot afford to loose control of convoys either. The Bn
desperately needs more people. Possible use of 513th
soldiers to fill in for motor pool dispatch and vehicle
inspection will provide a temporary solution. Eventual Bn
strength has been set at 56 soldiers. This includes both the
HHD and 3 contract truck company cadres.

30 June - Contacted 22nd SUPCOM deployment cell at Fort Dix,
New Jersey concerning deployment of 1103rd replacement
personnel. Two (2) aircraft carrying soldiers from the
1103rd are scheduled to depart for Dhahran today. Bn cdr,
and B Co Cdr, CPT Blake, (who is the COR for the new 800
truck contract) attend meeting with DCG Trans on convoy
escort requirements. The patriot mission is given to
military truck units still in the theatre. Mr Stone,
Secretary of the Army, visits the port.

at a ceremony in the evening. The medal is awarded with 2
