         MEMORANDUM FOR RECORD

SUBJECT: Analysis/Evaluation of Clothing and Gauze Samples (U)

         1. ,
V* On 11 March 1991, a shipment was received by Analytical
Research Division, Research Directorate, for analysis. The
shipment was orginally received at U.S. Army Chemical Research,
Development and Engineering Center on 7 March 1991 and stored in
the Central Toxic Facility (CTF) due to problems with engineering
controls. The shipment, in a wooden box, consisted of two
packages containing seven items and was designated as DS002,
Figures I and 2. The first package (DS002-1), overwrapped four
times in bags containing Vermiculite, consisted of a flak jacket
         (DS002-lA), Figures I and 2, a Nomex zippered shirt (DS002-IB),
Figures 3 and 4, a silicone wheel of the type used in an NBC
reconnaissance vehicle (DS002-IC), and a pair of rubber
protective gloves (DS002-lD), Figure 5. The second package
(DS002-2), also overwrapped in bags, contained two zip-lok bags.
The first zip-lok bag contained a several-layered piece of gauze
with a yellowish discoloration on the top center piece (DS002-
2A), Figure 6. The second zip-lok bag contained a small plastic
snap top vial with a piece of olive material (marked coveralls)
         insid@- (DS002-2B), Figure 6, a readout from the NBC
reconnaissance vehicle, and an envelope with additional readouts
         from the vehicle.
         2. AO;k The vapor in equilibrium with the inside of the bag of
clothing was sampled and was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass
spectrometry (GC/MS). The vapors in equilibrium with the inside
of the zip-lok bag containing the gauze pad and also the plastic
container with the coverall material were also sampled and
analyzed by GC/MS techniques. Portions of the following items
were removed and extracted with deuterated chloroform and
         deuterated water:

                              Item Identification

                    shoulder, front DS002-lAl, -IA2
Nomex shirt, left wrist area DS002-lBL
Nomex shirt, right wrist area DS002-IBR
Nomex shirt, upper left arm DS002-lBLUA
                   Gauze pad DS002-2A
                   Olive coverall material DS002-2B
