MEMORANDUM FOR CDR 7TH TRANS GRP
SUBJECT: Unsatisfactory waste disposal
1. On 08 May, SGT Voogeli and SPC Catron received a request
from the Batar troop medical clinic to investigate a
potentially hazardous waste disposal problem at the Port
Housing Area (D-8), Camp II.
2. On 09 May, The problem was investigated. The problem
exists because of sewer problems at this facility. There is
a possible blockage of the system which is causing raw human
waste to overflow spilling onto the adjacent areas. MSG
Howell accompanied us on a physical site survey. He pointed
out the possible problem areas. He also stated that steps
have been taken to fix the problem.
3. It appeared that these steps have only helped the problem
in the short term aspect. There was standing waste water at
the site. Contractors have been there several times to
remove the waste, but it seems to reoccur often.
4. Recommendations:
A. The standing water on the premises should be removed
as quickly as possible as it provides an artificial
habitat for mosquito breeding and also aids in rodent
infestation.
B. The sewer system at this post should be repaired
properly so that this problem does not reoccur.
C. The problem should be monitored so that if it does
reoccur, it can be fixed quickly. This problem presents
a serious health risk to all persons living in the area
and also to any water source it may come in contact with.
It can also indirectly affect the personal hygiene of the
troops that inhabit the camp.
D. It is also our recommendation that personnel be
informed that the Saudi sewer system uses a smaller
diameter pipe. This tends to block easier than the
systems used stateside. It should be recommended that
toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, and other waste
material should not be disposed into the system. This
waste material should be placed in covered containers and
disposed of daily.
5. These recommendations should be followed in order to solve
this problem. It presents a great health risk as it aides in
