4.a. While stationed at Log Base Nelligan, Iraq, the 1776th was responsible
for' ALL MP missions in the LOS base and an several hundred miles to MSR Green,
Blue, Burgundy, Black and Fox. Missions included Traffic Enforcement$ Traffic
Control Points, MSR security, Area Security, EPW processing and transfer
security, route signing, and humanitarian aid to Iraqi civilians. These
missions are explained in detail as follows:
(1) Traffic Enforcement included: Speed Enforcement (speed traps) @ere set
up to slow the troops down. Top speed recorded was 68 M.P.H. in 25 M.P.H.
zone. DD Fms 14OBs were issued and sent up the chain of command. Safety check
lanes were established to stop three or more vehicle convoys and the following
areas were checked: lights, brakes, Convoy Cdrs safety assessment, sleep
management, helmets and seat belts being worn, speed, distance between
vehicles.
(2) Traffic Control Points were manned 24 hrs throughout the LOG base.
Other TCPs were established as needed'during the retrograde of the divisions
back to Saudi. The MP teams also recorded convoy travel times, size, and
direction of travel of all vehicles.
(3) MSR Security was conducted 24 hrs per day an about 200 miles of MSR.
MP Teams would travel the MSR insuring soldiers and vehicles did not leave the
MSR and travel into mine fields, kept soldiers out of bunker complexs
scavenging for souvenirs, helping stranded soldiers, stopping and searching
Iraqi civilians and their vehicles, and reporting any other problems on the
MBR.
(4) Area Security mission would include at least two to three MP teams per
day traveling the MSR as the "Eyes and Ears" of the Battle field. Teams
would stop and talk to units throughout the Log Base, Saudi and Kuwait.
They would also report any problems throughout their Area of Operations.
(5) Enemy Prisoner of War processing and escorting mission was assigned to
the unit while in Iraq after the unit that had the mission jumped North just
after the Ground war ended. The 1776th mission was to search, process (if
needed), feed, secure over night (if needed), provide medical support, and
escort to Saudi Arbia.
(6) Route signing mission consisted of placing hand made signs along the
MSP every 1/2 to I mile. Approximately 10,000 signs Were built and put up
during the viar. Among the MSR signs Were safety reminder signs, speed signs,
danger signs, directional signs, name of MSR signs, and stop signs.
(7) Humanitarian Aid was provided to well over 100 Iraqi civilians in the
form of food, water, and medical support.
4.b. The 3rd platoon assisted in the capture of nine (9) Iraqis in an
Artillery Bunker. Later that day they also captured another 16 Iraqis (three
were Republican Guard Officers). To reach the 16 Iraqis the MPS had to drive
their vehicles through an enemy mine field and back out once all the prisoners
were searched.
4.c. The mission of EPW handling is not one the unit has ever trained for;
however, the unit was assigned the mission and Processed over 10,000 prisoners
vjithout a single casualty or mishap.
