"The unit shown and its members have been ordered to active
duty... 11
So begin the orders calling the 807th Surgical Hospital
(Mobile Army) of Paducah, Kentucky to active federal service with
the United States Army as it participates in operation 'TDESERT
SHIELD". COL Bradford Mutchler, M.D. was called to accept the
challenge of leading the original 188 members of the unit into
the unknown. These people will leave behind all that was
important in their lives: family, friends, positions and
occupations. Ahead of them lies, for most, the greatest challenge
of their lives. Important questions nagged at even thd most
confident among them. Can we do this job? Will things be the way
our training teaches us they will be?
The following is an account of the joys and sorrows, trials
and tribulations, achievements and, yes, even the errors of this
unit. We dedicate it to the unsung heroes of our deployment: the
family and friends who supported us from home. No medal can
reward their courage and loyalty.
