This mission begins as it should, with prayer. Members of
the unit, and their family and friends assemble at the drill hall
on 17th Street for a prayer service. It is a time to think about
the mission that lays before us, the hazards which will have to be
endured. We pray for the strength to carry out this important
mission, as well as for a quick and safe return home.
The city of Paducah coordinated a farewell, orchestrated by
the Mayor, Gerry Montgomery. Mayor Montgomery's husband, COL
Wally Montgomery, M.D., is the brigade surgeon for our higher
headquarters, the 332nd Medical Brigade. What a farewell it is!
The convoy route was lined with enthusiastic well-wishers from
the drill hall all the way to Interstate 24. American flags,
yellow ribbons, personal signs and posters were all in abundance,
and our hearts are touched by this outpouring of love and support.
Family, friends and fellow workers from Western Baptist and
Lourdes Hospitals make up a great deal of the crowd, but hundreds
of citizens who were unknown to us also turn out. The lone
bell of St. Paul's Lutheran Church rings out, it's pealing saying,
"Good-bye, Godspeed, come home soon and safe."
As we move our convoy towards Ft. Campbell, it seems as
though every overpass teems with a proliferation of flags,
