We spend the next several days resting and enjoying the
sunshine. Gym shorts and t-shirts prevail as we try to catch our
breath after our dash across the desert. With no showers, our
amenities are minimal, but everyone seems to enjoy our period of
forced inactivity. We are told that we'll remain here only a day
or two, but this stretches to four, and many people, who planned
to "rough it" without tents are wishing they had set them up,
especially after one particularly rainy night. In the meantime we
mistakenly begin to believe that our mission has been completed.
7 March 1991
Today we are moving again, transferred to the control of the
3rd Armored Division. The 26 mile trip back to the Iraqi/Kuwaiti
border (N2955/E4706) takes less than three hours. We put our
tents up in record time, and then we are able to make our way to
the phones for our first contact with families back home in 18
days! This bank of phones is seven miles away, and the line
stretches 3 to 4 hours, yet we willingly wait this time for the
chance at making a ten minute call. A small PX has also sprouted
here, as has, of all things, a hamburger stand! The "Wolfburger"
is the brain child of Chief Warrant Officer Wesley Wolf, who
thought this would be a great way to raise morale. All the
burgers are made by volunteers from various 3rd Armor Division
units, and McDonald's has never tasted as good as these taste!
