contrary, people just can not seem to leave them alone. They seem
to be drawn to them, almost mystically. The devastation they
cause on explosion is unbelievable, Shrapnel is driven
everywhere, limbs are severed by the force of detonation, massive
abdominal bleeding and pulmonary overpressure wounds occur. Even
innocent bystanders far from the point of the blast end up with
shrapnel injuries. All these patients need surgery, whether to
halt internal bleeding and complete partial amputations in the
severe cases, or just to clean and debride the wounds in the case
of those less severely injured. The number of patients exceeds
our modest abilities, so we improvise and move some of the less
seriously ill and injured into the medical supply tent. 50
patients are treated today, and more continue to arrive, along
with their families. Three children are admitted with flash
burns, and again our need for a pediatric specialist is
highlighted. Civilian casualties from unexploded ordnance and
       ammunition continue to arrive daily.

arrival at our hospital. We improvise a hasty postpartum ward,
and again lament the lack of a pediatrician here. This somewhat
healthy newborn is followed by our first infant with Kwashiorkor,
