       2 April 1991

Five U.S. soldiers ran over a land mine today. Two of them
were killed immediately, one was shipped to the 12th Evacuation
Hospital, near Al Qaysuiuah in Saudi Arabia, and we take the other
two to the operating room. The more severely injured soldier has
a fractured jawbone, along with internal injuries. His surgery
is extensive, requiring a team of four surgeons over six hours to
complete his case. The second soldier is less critically injured,
but still requires surgery. This seems to put an end to the
biggest part of our workload. It is obvious that the other two
MASH's are now taking patients, and things get a bit quieter in
       the hospital.

By 6 April 1991, we have admitted 631 patients. Comprising
this number are 449 U.S. soldiers, 170 civilians (either Iraqi,
Kuwaiti, or Bedouins), and 12 EPW'S. We have seen four births
and, unfortunately, eight deaths. If we include the number of
out-patients treated, our total exceeds 750 patients in 25 days.
This is a tremendous number for a facility which never has more
than 70 beds set up at any given time.
