Today we receive a severely injured patient who has shrapnel
which has penetrated his heart. Though already critically ill, we
must take him to the operating room. Open heart surgery in a
MASH is not our usual stock and trade, but we have the necessary
expertise to do this. Surgery reveals two to four holes in one of
the chambers of his heart. These are repaired, and he is taken to
the recovery room after a massive effort by the operating room
staff. It is to no avail, as the patient later dies of his
injuries- our eighth death. Six of the dead are refugee children.
The 912th MASH announces they are open for business just
twenty miles from here, just off a main blacktop road. The 475th
MASH moves into southern Iraq and sets up. Relief is starting to
arrive, and we are all grateful for it!
1 April 1991
LTG Frederick Franks, the VII Corps Commander, stops by for
a visit. He hands out coins specially made for this campaign, and
delights the members of our unit by handing them out freely,
stopping and chatting with nearly everyone. His aide confines
that he rarely hands these out, so we should feel honored. He is
very happy with the work we have done here, and it is nice to be
recognized for it.
