NOVEMBER THE ADVANCE PARTY'S FIVE VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT WERE
DRIVEN TO NELLINGEN BARRACKS. ON 21 NOVEMBER THEY WERE DRIVEN TO
RHEIN MAIN AIR BASE AND FLOWN TO SWA VIA A C-5A AIRCRAFT. THE S-
2/3 HAD PROPONENCY FOR PEACETIME AND WARTIME RULES OF
ENGAGEMENT(ROE) AND ESTABLISHING TRAINING. UPDATING WEAPON
QUALIFICATIONS. NBC TRAINING AND A SWA ORIENTATION WERE TOP
PRIORITY. ON I DEC 1990 THE S-3 OFFICER, REAR BATTLE NCO, S-3
DRIVER, C&E OFFICER AND A WIREMAN DEPLOYED TO SA WITH THE
REMAINDER OF THE ADVANCE PARTY. THE ADVANCE PARTY WAS DRIVEN TO
NELLINGEN BARRACKS, WENT TTIRU A POM PROCESS AND WAS FLOWN OUT OF
STUTTGART AIRPORT, ARRIVING IN DIIAHRAN.THE MISSIONS OF THE
ADVANCE PARTY WERE TO: 1) DETERMINE THE PROCEDURES AT THE PORT TO
STAGE PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT FOR EVENTUAL DEPLOYMENT TO A TAA.
2) FORGE LINKS WITH INCOMING UNITS SUBORDINATE TO THE GROUP,
3)r)ETERMINE SUPPLY PROCEDURES, 4)RECON THE TAA WITH 1ST AD FOR
7TIl CSG UNIT LOCATIONS AND 5) LIAISON WITH 2D COSCOM(FWD)/ARCENT
SUPCOM AT DAHARAN. ON 5 DECEMBER THE S-3 OFFICER, COMMO OFFICER,
22D MAINT CO REPRESENTATIVE, S-3/71ST LTF AND A 2ND COSCOM SPO
PLANS OFFICER CONDUCTED A RECON OF MSRs AUDI AND DODGE, AND LOG
BASE ALPHA TO LOCATE POTENTIAL UNIT LOCATIONS. UPON RETURN TO
PORT THE S-3 SPENT THE NEXT 3 DAYS COMPILING THE STATUS OF
INBOUND SHIPS AND THE NUMBER OF PIECES OF EQUIPMENT BY UNIT ON
EACH SHIP. SOME UNIT EQUIPMENT WAS SPLIT BETWEEN 8 DIFFERENT
SHIPS. SHIPS WERE LOADED AT PORT WITH NO REGARD TO UNIT INTEGRITY
EXCEPT FOR THE 2D ACR. MAIL WAS A BIG PROBLEM AS 120-140 TONS A
DAY WERE ARRIVING IN THEATER WITH 7 TONS A DAY GOING OUT. THE
MAIL FOR 7TIl CORPS ONLY STARTED MOVING WHEN THE CORPS POSTAL UNIT
ARRIVED IN MID DECEMBER.
ON 8 DECEMBER THE MAIN BODY DEPARTED GERMANY AND WAS SCHEDULED TO
ARRIVE AT DHAHRAN AIRFIELD. AT 1700 HRS THE ARRIVAL LOCATION WAS
CHANGED TO KING FAHD AIRFIELD. AT 2100 HRS THE ARRIVAL LOCATION
WAS CHANGED BACK TO DHAHRAN FOR AN ARRIVAL AT 2200 HRS. THE S-3
OFFICER MET THE MAIN BODY AT WAREHOUSE 20A AT 0230 HRS 9 DEC. ON
10 DEC THE S-3 OFFICER, GROUP CDR, LOG OPS OFFICER. S&S OFFICER.
AND S-3 LTF 71 DROVE TO LOG BASE ALPHA TO MEET THE ADC(S). 1ST
AD, ON 11 DEC THE RECON TEAM DEPARTED FOR TAA THOMPSON, ANOTHER
33 MILES TO THE WEST OF LOOBASE ALPIIA.THE DSA WAS RECONNOITORED
AND DIVIDED ABOUT 60-40, 60% TO 1ST AD, 40% TO 7TH GROUP. THE
TOWN OF AL QUAYSUMAH WAS RECONNOITORED AND THE RECON PARTY
DEPARTED BACK TO THE PORT. AT PORT IT BECAME OBVIOUS THAT
EVERYTHING WAS SELFHELP. ON 15 DEC THE S-3 AND LOG OPS OFFICERS
DEPARTED THE PORT FOR TAA THOMPSON TO COORDINATE REAL ESTATE
LOCATIONS WITH THE ADC(S) & ADC(M), IST AD AND FINALIZE LOCATIONS
FOR GROUP HEADQUARTERS, LTF 71 & LTF 213. THE RECON ELEMENT
ASSISTED IN THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A DIVISIONAL MSR AND TWO GROUP
INTERNAL MSRS. ON 18 DECEMBER AT 2100 HOURS THE MAIN BODY
DEPARTED PORT AND CONVOYED ALONG MSR DODGE TO THE 2D COSCOM STArdA
ARRIVING AT 0500 HOURS ON 19 DECEMBER. A LEADERS RECON OF THE
FIELD SITE WAS CONDUCTED WHILE THE REMAINDER OF THE COMPANY
RESTED IN THE STAMA. ON 20 DECEMBER THE GROUP HEADQUARTERS ALONG
WITH IIHC, LTF 213, CONVOYED TO TAA THOMPSON AND ESTABLISHED A
