S 2/3 Historical Summary
Aug 90 - Mid Oct 90
On or about the 14th of August 1990, while a part of the 3d coscom, v
Corps, the S 2/3 Section initially became involved with Operation Desert
Shield. The 12th Aviation Sdo of the V Corps was alerted for Immediate
deployment to SWA. The 16th CSG was tasked to establish two Departure
Air Control Groups (DACG). The organic assets of the 16th CSG, were task
organized into two DACGS, one to Rhein-Main AFB and the other to Ramstain
AFB. We completed the deployment of the 12th Aviation Brigade and
continued to operate DACGs to support other deployments from USAREUR until
the departure of the 16th CSG Headquarters. Under the command and Control
of the 3d COSCOM, these DACGs expanded to support the deployment of VII
Corps.
Mid Oct 90 - 7 Nov 90
In Mid October, leaning forward, we began staff planning and staff
drills to discuss what we would do should we be alerted for deployment.
This Planning included being deployed as a complete CSG or any portion
thereof. During this planning, we continued our normal missions to
support the non-divisional units of V Corps and continued deployment
support. This planning continued and with the many rumors of units
deploying, we began to think it was going to be one of our subordinate
-ompanies or battalions, we didn't think we would be alerted for
deployment. Other events that took place: the send off of a maintenance
support team from the 19th Maintenance Battalion, assumed command and
control of the 8/158th Aviation Battalion Rear, and provided family
support to the deployed units.
9 Nov 90
Thursday evening, 8 Nov 90, the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman
JCS formally announced the deployment of the VII Corps, 2d COSCOM and
other units. In that he said only 2d COSCOM we didn't think it would be
us. On Friday, 9 November, there were many rumors but no official
notification. It was not until late Friday evening, 9 November, that we
know we had been alerted. A meeting was called on Saturday morning with
the primary staff elements and the decision was made to enjoy Veterans Day
weekend and begin earnestly planning and working toward deployment on
Tuesday 13 Nov 90.
9 Nov 90 - Deployment
We continued the Command and control of our subordinate battalions
while we planned and conducted our loadout. All attempts were made to
insure that we reserved Sunday for time with our families. Many long
hours were spent; we methodically assembled the required supplies,
conducted staff drills and began assembling and loading our equipment. We
also conducted several coordination trips to the 2d COSCOM at Nelligen
Barracks.
