HISTORY OF THE 82ND ENGINEER BATTALION'S
INVOLVEMENT IN OPERATION DESERT SIIIELD/STORM
27 OCT 90 - 26 JUL 91
02 Aug 90: Spearheaded by the Republican Guard Corps, Iraq invades
and occupies neighboring Kuwait.
27 Oct 90: At the VII Corps Castle Ball, Colonel Raines, the VII
Corps Engineer, conducts an impromptu meeting and tells all his
Battalion Commanders that he expects the 7th Engineer Brigade to
deploy to SWA in the near future.
29 Oct 90 - 2 Nov 90: Battalion staff develops an estimate of the
effort to deploy the Battalion. All areas are examined: POMS;
maintenance; logistics; personnel; and training.
02 Nov 90: LTC Slattery tells staff to direct efforts to developing
a plan fo- the deployment of Battalion. Battalion also continues to
prepare for the Brigade Command Inspection (BCI) scheduled for 13 -
16 November 1990.
08 Nov 90: President Bush announced that he was sending European
and stateside forces over to Saudi to give the Coalition Forces an
offensive capability.
09 Nov 90: The Brigade cancels the BCI. The 82nd Engineer Battalion
is notified by the 7th Engineer Brigade that it will deploy to SWA
in support of Operation Desert Shield. Battalion strength is 669
soldiers-- 87% of ALO 2. Enclosure I lists unit strength by
composition. Enclosure 3, tab A. lists key personnel. A Battalion
formation is held and a formal announcement is made to the
soldiers.
10 Nov 90: 7th Engineer Brigade conducts a meeting In Stuttgart to
begin planning. The Battalion Commander, Command Sergeant Major,
and S-3 attend.
13 Nov 90: Bamberg Military Community starts consolidated POM. A
and C Company are the first units to go through pre-deployment
screening. POM status is in enclosure 3, tab B.
14 Nov 90: B, D and HHC go through community POM.
15 Nov 90; Family support meeting is hold. The Battalion families
are briefed on why and how the Battalion would deploy and the plans
for rear detachment support.
