MEMORANDUM FOR COL Alm, ARCENT MEDCOM Assistant Chief of
Staff, Veterinary Services
SUBJECT: South LOC Veterinary Meeting/Trip Report
1. Attendants: COL Trask, CW3 Brandow, SFC Pratt from
Riyadh, CDR 483rd Med Det, OICs and NCOICS, OIC of 422nd Med
[)et from Bastc)ne area, CDR 248th Med Det/NCO from Pulaski
area.
2. COL Trask announced to suspend all civilian sanitary
inspections due to commencement of war on 16 Jan 1991 to be
called Operation Desert Storm (ODS) until further notice by
telephone.
3. CPT W@@ippo just returned from obtaining blood samples
for Babesia testing and incoming physical exams from 4 MWD
in Bahrain (Minon)a area). Prepared TDY orders to Qatar, UAE
to collect blood from those MWD as soon as Iraqis SCUD
attacks on Dhahran/Dammam cease during daylight hours and
flights begin again. COL Meese, CDR 47th Field Hospital com
phone 00-973-458-710 has agreed to provide life support for
CPT Whippo to move in with his enlisted in Bahrain, where he
could also cover Shak Isa in 1 hr drive. Hardshell villa -is
available. Also all 4 MWD need heartworm preventive because
on 1/2 MSD + 1/2 commercial day food so not getting enough
preventive. Also short of MSD; COL Trask referred to COL
Karbowski CENTAF SP to see if he could work with contracting
to do local purchase or Air Force supply system to obtain
nioi-e MSD. Point of Contact for Kennel Master is MSG Kenneth
Green, TAC 9-828S-BSO or Com 973-629-293.
4. Possibility of more MWD since being ordered by 47th
Field Hospital and Marines at Shak Isa area. CPT Whippo
will monitor.
El. All MWD in Dhahran/Danimam have been bled for Babesia
testing except the MWD MAJ Record Sth SFG was caring for.
483rd-9lTs were directed to conclude that blood draw (MAJ
Record has possibly departed area) next Thursday for
shipment back to Riyadh with COL Trask next Friday. MAJ
Gaiser reported they were treating 1 Babesia positive MWD in
his area with 150 mg Clindamycin BID. COL Trask had talked
to Dr Gary Anderson at DOD Military Working Dog Center this
week and Dr. Anderson said Clindamycin was not working as
well as Imizol by Burroughs Welcomme (generic Diminazone
Aceturate) intramuscular at 3.5 nig/kg one time. COL Trask
will attempt to purchase Imizol when local purchase contract
goes through and we know how many MWD are positive for
Babesia. In the meantime continue Clindamycin and make sure
blood sucking insects controlled. MAa Gaiser said no fleas
or ticks present but needs dip for spring. COL Trask is
