3. Rodents. The Kangeroo rat, which is found in abundance locally, is
more of a nuisance than anything. Keep food sealed and off the ground. Don't
keep these animals as pets. They could harbor the bacteria that causes
Leishmaniasis (a skin and/or internal disease that is very hard to trea@-
4. Scorpions and snakes. An abundance of poisonous animals live in this
desert environment. Many soldiers have been stung and bitten since our troops
have been in this environment. Soldiers should never play with these creatures.
If stung o- bitten the animal should be killed in such a manner as to allow
for proper identification (the head of the sanke intact, the head and tail of
the scorpion intact).
5. Personal hygiene. Good personal hygiene is a must in this environment.
Soldiers should bathe as regularly as possible.
Remaining health in thisenviromment is a must)as difficult as it may seem. Unit
FST must be proactive and take their responsibilities seriously. Unit commanders
should actively utilize their Field Sanitation Teams. Pleasecontact the 61st
Med Det if your unit experiences problems above and beyond the capabilities
of your FST.
