               FIELD SITE LAYOUT GUIDELINES

               1. Field sanitation teams should provide the Commande- with input in the
siting of facilities within the perimeter.

               2. Shower and laundry facilities should be located in such a manner as to take
advantage of the natural grade to move waste water out of the perimeter if
possible and into sumps or evap. ditchesi not across the entrance or exit roads.
Line route with gravel to prevent the sides from caving. Roads should not cross
the anticipated path of the water. The free passage of water should not be
               hindered.

               3. Local winds are primarily from the north, sometimes from the south. Locate
latrines to the east or west of cents. Also it is preferable to orient tents
east and west for better stability. Entrance and exit roads create dust problems
and should be oriented east or west of the compound.

               4. Latrines should be 100 yds from the unit food service and downwind, 30 yards
from sleeping tents, and at least 100 ft from any unit water source. SST
should have easy access to latrines to remove wastes.

               5. Care should be taken in facility placement to avoid rodent infested areas,
determined by looking for rodent holes in sand. Avoid insect infested areas
(look for ants). Avoid wedis where flood hazard exists during rainy season.
Field sanitation cepmn have pesticides and rodent traps to remove unwanted pests,
however large infestations, such as tents over anthills and rodent colonies,
               are extremely difficult to control.

               6. If units absolutely must locate in areas of insect or rodent infestation,
supporting PM units should be contacted to make a quick site survey to provide
expert recommendations to minimize the problems.
