ISSUE: To provide information on the prevention of malaria.
           2. Pb.

               a. malaria is caused by a blood parasite and is transmitted
by the bite of an Infected female anopheline mosquito. It causes
fever, chills, fatigue and in some cases coma and death. six to
sixteen days after the bite the soldier will start to have
           symptoms.

               b. Mosquitos generally feed at dusk or early night, and are
generally found in areas of stagnant water and marshy areas such
as eastern Kuwait and southeastern Iraq.

               C. A soldier with malaria will be a loss to the unit.
Historically wars have been lost because of malaria. Entire
units can be lost to the war effort. General Patton's invasion
of Sicily was delayed because of malaria.

               d. Use of personal protective measures is the most important
method of preventing malaria. These include staying away from
mosquito breeding areas as much as the mission allows, keeping
the uniform sleeves down and pants bloused. Use DEET-containing
insect repellent on the skin and permethrin spray on the
clothing, and do not go outdoors in the evening and early morning
if the mission permits. Mosquito netting sprayed with permethrin
provides good sleeping protection. When possible ensure that
waste water drains into the ground and is not allowed to become
           stagnant.

               e. commanders are reminded that all soldiers who enter into
Kuwait or Iraq will take chloroquine tablets weekly. Following
departure from these areas soldiers will need to continue taking
medication for an additional six weeks.

               f. of the VII Corps soldiers who have developed malaria thus
far, compliance with preventive measures was sporadic at best.

           3. VII CORPS POSITION: Commanders will enforce measures
           designed to prevent malaria.
