MEDICAL CLEARING COMPANY ASSESSMENT:
- Provide immediate care for EPW up to 72 hours
- Triage
- Minimal surgery
- Treat minor illnesses
- Identify acute and chronic illnesses such as malaria, hepatitis, malitis,
skin infections, severe malnutrition
PREVENTIVE MEDICINE ASSESSMENT:
- LA (Entomology) and LB (Field Sanitation) assets available
- Delousing
- Fly/Vector control
- Sanitation inspection
- Field sanitation training
PLANNED EPW INPROCESSING STEPS:
- Individual EPW's will be deloused upon entry to camp
- EPW's will be strip searched by MP's prior to medical examination
- Medical personnel will treat minor injuries and illnesses and assess
health of EPW's
- A 72 hour holding capability for treated EPW's is available
- Serious injuries/illnesses will be transported to the rear area medical
treatment facilities
EPW's will be reclothed in training MOPP suits or other clothing
- MP's will inprocess prisoners (ID, Photo, etc.)
- Prisoners will be segregated into holding pens (officers, NCO'S,
Enlisted Men, Incorigibles)
- 3 to 24 hour holding time before moved to Theater Camp (theoretically)
RECOMMENDED ACTIONS TO REMEDY DEFICIENT AREAS:
- Showers and handwashing facilities provided to EPW's to control personal
hygiene and head lice
- Control of body lice, mosquitoes, flies, sandflies, and rodents by LA
team to check spread of vector-borne diseases
- Dig deep trenches and install urine tubes
- Have EPW's burn fecal wastes and clean own latrines
- Trash can5 will be obtained for collecting empty MRE bags and water
bottles in each holding pen
- Infectious wastes and trash will be bagged and burned.
- LB teams will train MP's in field sanitation and educate them about the
medical threat to themselves and other U.S. personnel working in the
camp
- Stress the use of Permanone by all U.S. personnel for personal protect-
ion against insect vector-borne diseases.
- EPW's which are severely malnourished may require special rations which
are high in phosphorus and easy to digest (rice, dates, skim milk or
cheese)
