SUBJECT: HEALTH CARE AND PREVENTIVE MEDICINE SUPPORT FOR EPW CAMP
AT LOG BASE E
A disease and health care assessment developed for EPW's processed
through Log Base E-was developed by LTC Keveney, Commander of the
145 Clearing Company in conjunction with MAJ Gibbons, LB Team Leader
and ILT Teig, LA Delousing Team of the 14 Preventive Medicine Detach-
ment. The following situation assessments desd'ribe the current state
of readiness:
EPW CONDITION (ASSUMED):
-EPW's lack personal hygiene
-Assume that no immunizations for disease have been administered
-Communicable diseases endemic to region are present in reservior
population of EPW's (i.e. malaria, tuberculosis, laishmaniasis,
endemic typhus, hepatitis, sandfly fever, filariasis, etc.)
-Malnutrition and open wounds and/or sores on EPW's
-Infested with lice
CAMP SITUATION:
-Latrines exist but disposal of fecal wastes not addressed
-No urinal tubes
-No means of collecting or disposing of trash and infectious medical
wastes
MRE's fed to prisoners
-Bottled water given to all prisoners
-Tents provided for shelter from heat/cold/sun exposure
-Location of camp and current sanitation situation favor development
of high insect/rodent populations which may act as disease vectors
CLIMATIC CONDITIONS PRESENT:
-Cold nights
-Hot days
-Precipitation
-High winds
-exposure (sunburn)
INSECT VECTORS AND VENOMOUS ANIMALS PRESENT:
-Sandflies
-Flies
-Lice
-Mosquitoes
-Scorpions
-Rodents/Fleas
-Snakes
MP ASSESSMENT:
-Untrained in field sanitation
-Unaware'of medical threat to MP's and Medical personnel working in camp
