I, make the following statement under oath~ On or
about 0200 on 5 December 1990 during an offensive operation against 3rd
AR Cay Rgmt, I was notified of a maintenance problem on A—66. I found
the vehicle and was looking at ith the left top deck doors
open. Lie communicated that the oil temperature light was on and the
transmission oil temperature was hot. £ then went back to my M—113 and
looked through TM—9--2350—255—20—l—2, page 3—1143, symptom T.0.C. 1, and
the first check was to check the oil coolers to see if they were clogged.
The left oil cooler was extremely clogged so I had the crew clean the
inlet screens after which I verified the operation of both side gear
boxes. I proceeded to field clean by pouring approximately 10 gallons of
water through the left oil cooler and an unknown quantity through the
right cooler-a nr. unPr:w~ gnnn+i+y through 4-lie right oasis:. The light
was still onT~P I progressed to block 2 of troubleshooting. It had me
check the parking/service brake light for operation. At that time I
could not check the light for activation due to it already being on from
ing light being on.So with the suggestion of
I went to sleep until morning (it was about 0430). I woke up at
0900 and by 0925 I had checked the coolers again and checked for the
operation of the parki""/ c.rvin- light which it came on as needed. At
that time the Captain oame with a fueler hemitt when 1
communicated to the Captain, Bndthat I needQto
verify the solution/problem wirn a roan test. The chain of command asked
if the vehicle would make it across the road. I said I don't know so the
Captain — crew opted to make the read test in conjuction with the
movement to the next assembly area. We made it approximately 5—6
kilometers with no problems. After being parked for 10—15 minutes, SGT
communicated that the problem was still present. I
then grabbed the TM again with the breakout box and troubleshot in its
entirety with the help of . The problem fell
out on transmission thermal relief valves, which are replaceable/fixable
at a level of inaint2nance hi her than mine. I then double checked my
efforts and told his transmission was at fault. He then
asked me if he c& IT rive t e vehicle if the light was off. I said what
does the —10 say. I also told him that as long as the light is off you
could drive it, however my recommendation is to call an M—88 to the
sight. Then drive A—66 as far as it will go until a temperature light
comes on then drag it back to basefl gathered up my equipment and
proceeded back to the M—113, once tTlWre I was questioned by
asked me what was wrong. I told him. He then asked if it can
aFTv~n. I told him yes until the temperature light comes on. But my
recommendation was to get a M—88 to follow A—SB back and if needed to
drag it to the base camp when the light came on. I then waited until
1500 when we s.p. 'd on another offensive operation to the beach club. In
route we had a maintenance stop which this time we had an engine oil
temperature light on. Again I checked the coolers and the left side was
clogged. So I cleaned it out then poured approximately 10—12 liters of
water through the cooler and the oil light went off. Once again I needed
a road test to verify the problem/solution. The operation continued and
and myself monitored for potential problems. We heard none,
