however we smelled burnt oil parts but I believed it to be my generator
system as it had become inoperative. Also it was a box formation and
pitch dark eo I had no idea where it was from. Upon arrival at the beach
club, I fueled up my M—113. After fueling the comp ~ both
         ?4—113's while doing so I heard a communication from~to
another person. stated something to the effect "I'm glad we
are here. This things on its last leg." Then we almost immediately
began moving to the company base camp. While moving we came to an halt
and someone said there's a fire. I moved into a position to see what was
up when I saw what I believed to be the fire extinguisher blowing up into
the air and a large flame from the left side precleaner door, then
approximately four personnel jumping off the vehicle. I then attempted
to move closer to help evacuate personnel as the vehicle was in the camp
was directed otherwise by simultaneous directives from my TO —
and a radio broadcast from one of the platoon leaders (I believe
~ThTTW~l). At which point we rallied on a point indicated by a
flashlight. I then complied with all command instructions.
Now for a few relative facts. First I have in the recent past
replaced other components. They include the drivers instrument panel
which was except for the gauges, which was communicated by
myself torn nd the replacement of the first shot fire bottle
approximately two weeks ago during a gunnery. I have also helped pull
scheduled services on this vehicle and believe that the fire system was
operational, however, I remember there was no fuel cell heat shield on
the right side. I found that to be stupid, but the —10 says nothing
contrary to it. And just prior to the FTX I pulled the batteries for the
crew then reinstalled them. In another note, in addition to the
transmission cooler screen being hot the oil was bubbling hot. Also as a
final note I gave a statement to the safety officer from division and
have had at no time my rights read or given to me.
