         B. inadequate  water intake by soldiers.  Eight soldiers have been heat injury
         victims. All but one were in MOPP gear.   Victims were involved in such
         activities as operating-vehicles, road marching, uoioading equipment, and
         gunnery. Although eight victims may @c small compaked to the total' undergoing
         acclimatization, this area needs to receive continued emphasis.

         9. Wearing of rings around vehicles and equipment. Ooe soldier severely cut
         his left ring finger when his ring was caught in the corner of a FAADS turret
         ladder. No specific regulation prohibits the wearing of rings and other
         jewelry around vehicles. One of the safety instructions listed on page 14, FM
         21-17, 11 Dec 81, Driver Selection, Training, And Supervison, Track Combat
         vehicles, h'owever, states, "Removal of Jewelry. Severe injuries to fingers
         and wrists, and even electrocutions can occur whenever personnel do not remove
         rings, bracelets, and wristwatches before mounting, dismounting, or operating
         equipment." No such instructions exist in FM 21-305, 24 Sep 84, Manual for
         the Wheeled Vehicle Driver. commanders should make the call whether or not to
         prohibit wearing of rings and other jewelry when mounting, dismounting, or
         operating.tracked and wheeled vehicles.
