            UNCLXSSIFIED:

1989, MMWR, 111989 Sexually Transmitted Disease Guidelines." (Val.
            38, No. S-8)

            10. Animal Associated Diseases

Low risk. Rabies is moderately enzootic and risk should be
considered for all (especially urban) areas. (Rabies is reported
            to be absent in Bahrain).
It is recommended that personnel be prudent in their contact
with all domestic and wild animals. General guidance for the
management of animal bites is found in NAVMEDCOMINST 6220.4,
"Rabies Prevention and Control." if there are any questions,
bites of any kind should be reported promptly to local public
health authorities and/or to NEPMU-7. It is advisable to have
Human diploid cell rabies vaccine (HDVC) and rabies immune
globulin (RIG) for post-exposure treatment should it be
            indicated.

            11. Other Health Considerations

Schistosomiasis (low risk) is reported in these areas. The
extent and prevalence will vary with location. An outbreak of
type A. Meningococcal Meningitis in 1987 affected numerous
participants in the annual pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca, Saudi
Arabia. Risk of Meningococcal disease is low, but crowded
conditions during the annual Hajj enhance potential for
            transmission via respiratory route.
Congo Crimean Hemorrhagic fever is present (low risk) in Iran
and Iraq with high mortality and potential for person-to-person
            transmission (e.g. hospitals).
Iraq requires HIV testing of all foreigners (except if they
are over 60 years old) staying more than 14 days.

            12. Climate Considerations

Heat, dust and humidity factors will have a major effect on
personnel. Adequate fluids should be insured. Eye and skin
autions should be utilized.

            13. The disease risk assessments above are not intended to be
all inclusive and should not be used as the sole source of
Preventive Medicine information. This unit maintains more
specific information on this region and on other countries in our
AOR (Africa, Europe and the Middle East). Requests for
information on countries should be requested by message to NEPmu-
7 at least 14-21 days prior to entry into that country to allow
sufficient time for response and implementation of
            recommendations.

                                                              UNCLASSIFIED
                                             4
