         10. Animal Associated Diseases

Low risk. Rabies is reported to be moderately enzootic
countrywide. Risk should be considered for all urban areas.
Historically, the greatest risk has been reported from the
Caspian area of the north. A 1975 serosurvey indicated 11% of
human and 20% of animal specimens were positive for Q-Fever.
There are greater than 1000 cases of Brucellosis reported
annually. It is recommended that personnel be prudent in their
contact with all domestic and wild animals. General guidance for
the management of animal bites is found in NAVMEDCOMINST 6220.4,
"Rabies Prevention and Control.,' If there are any questions,
bites of any kind should be reported promptly to local public
health authorities and/or to NEPMU-7. It is adviseable to have
Human diploid cell rabies vaccine (HDVC) and rabies immune
globulin (RIG) for post-exposure treatment should it be indicat-
         ed.

         II. other Health Considerations

Low risk. Risk of Schistosomiasis is dependent on exposure
to fresh water impoundments. Schistosoma haematobium is reported,
level unclear. The affected areas are in the southwestern part
of the country bordering Iraq, from the regions of Dezful and Sar
Dasht to Khorramshar, and is limited to the east by the Zagros
mountains (Khuzistan province). Exposure to freshwater impound-
ments should be avoided or, if impossible, minimized.

         12. Climate Considerations

Terrain is rugged, mountainous rim; high central basin with
deserts, mountains, small, discontinuous plains along both
coasts. Climate is mostly arid or semiarid, and subtropical
along the Caspian coast. Intense heat and sun from June through
August, especially on the @uzestan Plains, may have a major
ids, eye and skin protection
         are recommended.
