            2. A few general comments about the data are in-order.

            a. Since this data is extracted from sick call logs, it is only
as good as the log itself. The quality of logs varies from unit
to unit, and sometimes does not include minor complaints treated
at the company level by the corpsman. Some degree of mis-
classification also occurs at the unit level when the log is
            summarized.

            b. The conglomerated summary information from many units tends to
hide some significant individual unit trends. The disease
experience of each major unit is contained in a separate spread-
sheet, and describes unit-specific outbreaks and trends.

         c. In general, the denominator listed includes about two-thirds
of the force strength. The missing one-third is made up of small
units or detachments which do not have a BAS-level medical
department, and are not formally enrolled in surveillance.

            d. Denominators for the past 2 to 3 weeks do not include many
manuever units, because of the nature of combat operations.

            a. During the weeks of 13 and 20 January, there was a
significant decline in sick call visits in every category. This
corresponds precisely to the onset of hostilities (17 Jan), and
probably represents a shift in the normal threshold for seeking
            medical care.

            3. Specific comments on the enclosures:
