SOURCE: Onboard personnel as reported to COMUSNAVLOGSUPFOR for
21 November. The 1,000-bed requirement was determined by OP-932
prior to the 11 January manning requirements review.

               a. These were converted to hospital corpsman requirements.

SELRES units from Program 32 were recalled to complete the staffing
of the two hospital ships. Table 6 shows the additional medical manning
requirements for the hospital ships as of mid November to be 308 for
USNS Hercy and 324 for USNS Comfort. Most of the requirements were for
ed hospital corpsman. Efforts to determine the additional require-
ments were complicated because of disparity between the staffing needed
for 1,000-bed capability, as perceived by the hospital ships, and the
hospital ship-manning document. A review of the manning requirements
was completed on 11 January 1991, and resulted in an increase of 99
hospital corpsman and a reduction of approximately 100 nonmedical
               enlisted personnel (seamen and airmen).
