          RESULTS

Eighty questionnaires were completed. Of those who completed
questionnaires, 61 (76%) were veterans of ODSS. Out of 64 members
or former members of the detachment who were in ODSS, 61 completed
the questionnaire for a response rate of 95%.

General characteristics of veterans, as noted in Table 1, were
unremarkable except for the age differences between veterans with
a DSM diagnosis and veterans without a DSM diagnosis. Fifty percent
of veterans with a DSM diagnosis were over 50 years old compared to
11.8% of those without a DSM diagnosis.

None of the veterans with a DSM diagnosis had 16 or more years
in the reserves compared to 25.5% of those without a DSM diagnosis.
Also, 70% of those with a DSM diagnosis had attended a military
school besides A or C school, whereas, only 39.2% of those without
a DSM diagnosis had attended such a school (Table 2).

Time in Southwest Asia was similar between the two groups.
However, the veterans with a DSM diagnosis spent twice as much time
in unspecified locations as those without a diagnosis (Table 3).

Eighty percent of veterans with a DSM diagnosis presently
reported having more than 10 symptoms. Of Veterans without a
diagnosis, only 29.4% had more than than 10 symptoms (Table 4).

The ten most common symptoms experienced by veterans and the
present status of each symptom are listed in table 5. Symptoms
which showed the most improvement included rash, sleeping problems,
depression, and diarrhea. Symptoms which showed the highest
percent of worsening included joint pains, fatigue, and confusion.

Most of the confirmed diagnoses among veterans can be
categorized into DSM or NON-DSM diagnoses. Of the DSM diagnoses,
4 were adjustment disorders which represented the largest single
group. Besides DSM diagnoses, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal,
and genitourinary diagnoses made up about half of the diagnoses
          given.
