          RECOMMENDATIONS

After the experience in Asheville and the analysis of the data
collected there, the following recommendations are given for the
          Persian Gulf Study:

          1. Continue visiting detachments of RNMCB 24 until all have been
included in the Study. This will insure that a distinct study
population has been thoroughly studied and will increase the
          quality of the final results.

          2. As each detachment is visited, follow roughly the same
itinerary used in Asheville (Appendix B). This includes going to
a Persian Gulf Support Group if one is available.

          3. Expand the questionnaire to include more sociodemographic,
diagnostic, symptomatology, and exposure questions. Utilize
feedback and inputs from the Naval health Research Center.

          4. Develop a partnership with the VA. Request that the VA
medical centers closest to each detachment cooperate in the
          following:

               a. The Persian Gulf Registry at each VA medical center should
keep a separate grouping of Battalion 24 veterans' records for
               the purposes of this study.

               b. Every Battalion 24 veteran will have a psychiatry
evaluation as indicated. Also, every veteran with more than
10 symptoms will have a psychiatry evaluation and a followup
exam six months and one year after the initial evaluation.

               c. Every Battalion 24 veteran will have blood drawn in order
to bank their sera for future testing. It could be compared
with pre-Gulf War sera held by the Navy sera repository.

               d. Each VA medical center will keep NEPMU2 informed about
recent diagnoses in Battalion 24 veterans.

          5. Request one full-time epidemiologist and one full-time corpinan
t of NEP14U2.

          6. If a large scale study is funded, recall at least one
reservist corpsman to active duty for a period of at least one year
to assist with the study and coordinate with the reserve units.
This individual would also educate the resident corpsman at each
reserve center so they too would be able to assist in the study.
