Encl: Background on anthrax as a Elio-Warfare Agent, LCDR Kevin
                 Hanson, MC, USN

           1. The enclosure was written by the head of the Navy preventive
medicine team assigned to assist the Navy and Marines in Desert
Shield. (Part of the team has established a fairly sophisticated
microbiology lab at the? "Marine Corps hospital" that can identify
disease Causing organisms, including potential SW agents.) The
enclosed report represents a consensus of available opinions.

           2. Of the two drugs mentioned, Doxycycline is a tetracycline-
like antibiotic that has a wide spectrum of effectiveness. it
has been around for about 10 years. It would be taken twice a
day, often as a prophylactic measure for a number of diseases,
even malaria. (MEDLOBCO has about 100,000 capsules in stock.)

           3. The other drug, cipro+loxacin (or Cipro) is a relatively new
drug--and expensive. As it is new, few germs have developed any
resistance to it and the infectious disease specialists would
like to reserve its use +or more serious infections. We bought
some of it expeditiously ($8,000, not on current AMAL'S) to treat
Our recent cases of diarrhea. We don't have much of it on hand
(only about 1,100 tablets in stock, also taken twice daily).

                                            Very Respectfully,

                                            Jerry Crim
