                                              UN LASSIFIED

           SUBTECT: Medi@-al Chemical Information Update

L.. Pyridostlgmine Pretreatment for Nerve Agents (PB
will be used to reduce the severity of nerve agent poisoning-,
shorten the treatment.and increase the survival rate of'
soldiers. Each soldier will be issu6d 2 packets. Each packet
provides tablets for-7 days.. Soldiers must safeguard these
packets against loss. The soldier will be notified when to take
the tablets through command channels. Once instructed to take
the tablets, the soldier will take I tablet every 8 hours. IF A
DOSE IS MISSED, DO NOT MAKE IT UP. DO NOT TAK.E 2 TABLETS AT-ONCE
BECAUSE OF A MISSED DOSE-MERLELY START AGAIN WITH I TABLET EVERY
           S. HOURS. SOLDIERS SHOULD BE CAUTIONED TAKING TWO TABLETS'AT ONCE
DOES NOT-PROVIDE ADDITIONAL PROTECTION AND COULD CAUSE ADVERSE
REACTIONS. Adverse reactions for overdose include : abdominal
cramps nausea, diarrhea, skin rash, muscle weakness cramps-and
twitching or dimness of vision. If these symptoms occurs stop
taking the tablets and see your.medicp ASAP. This is a.
supplement to treatment, not a treatment for nerve agent. You
must still treat for nerve agent utilizing the Mark I kit.

           2. There has been contradictory information on the Chemical
Protective Overgarment's (CPOG) ability to prevent penetration of
.Dusty Mustard, thus allowing skin exposure to Dusty Mustard
           agent. i
               a. Dusty Mustard will penetrate the CFOG.

               b. The penetration is not enough to do significant damage or
to be casualty producing unless the soldier has a severe allergic
reaction, or the soldier is exposed to such a massive
concentration that he/she would be a'casualty anyway. The'damage
caused is likely to be a sporadic skin irritation, similar to a,
           sunburn.

               C. Protective Measures. @...Iervious material, such as we+
weather jacket/pant or poncho, BUT the heat burden of wearing the
CPOG and wet weather gear will probably outweigh the protective"
           action.

           3. Questions concerning the above information can be directed to
           the 18th Airborne Corps Surgeon's office Avn 236-6516 5772
           secure number is 2e74.
