TEXT. 1. MANAMA IS CALM ON THIS COLD AND WINDY DAY.  STREET 
ACTIVITY IS BACK TO NORMAL.  THERE ARE NO INDICATIONS IN 
BAHRAIN OF ANY PLANNED HOSTILE ACTIVITIES DIRECTED AGAINST 
AMERICAN OR WESTERN INTERESTS. 
 
2. THE MAJOR TOPIC OF CONVERSATION ON THE MINDS OF BAHRAINI 
GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS IS THE MASSIVE OIL SPILL IN THE GULF.  
WHICH IS EXPECTED TO REACH THE COAST OF BAHRAIN IN FOUR TO 
FIVE DAYS.  BAHRAINIS CURRENTLY APPEALING FOR INTERNATIONAL 
ASSISTANCE IN FIGHTING THE OIL SLICK WHICH COULD AFFECT 
BAHRAINS DESALINATION PLANTS FOR MANY YEARS.  BAHRAIN IS 
2/3S DEPENDENT ON DESALINATION PLANTS FOR ITS DRINKING WATER 
SUPPLY.  IN ADDITION MARINE LIFE AND FISH BREEDING GROUNDS 
COULD AFFECT BAHRAINS MAJOR FOOD SOURCE.  BAHRAIN HAS 
ALREADY BLOCKED OFF THE BAY OF SALWA.  WHICH LIES BETWEEN 
BAHRAIN AND QATAR IN THE ARABIAN GULF.  MOREOVER, THREE 
BOOMS HAVE BEEN PUT IN PLACE PROTECTING THE SITRA 
DESALINATION PLANT
