OIL SLICK UPDATE

THE LEADING EDGE OF THE OIL SLICK ORIGINATING FROM THE MINA'AL

AHMADI TERMINAL HAS PASSED THE TIP OF RA'S AS ZAWR IN SAUDI ARABIA

AND IS WITHIN 35 MILES OF THE DESALINATION PLANT AT AL JUBAYL. WINDS

FROM THE NORTH ARE EXPECTED TO SPEED ITS ADVANCE THE OIL SLICK WILL

PROBABLY REACH AL JUBAYL ON 1 FEBRUARY.

THE NEW SPILL FROM MINA'AL BAKR AND A BURNING TANKER NEARBY

ALREADY EXCEEDS 2 MILLION BARRELS. EVEN IF THE TERMINAL LOST ALL ITS

PUMPING CAPACITY, ANOTHER 2.5 MILLION BARRELS COULD DRAIN FROM PIPES

FEEDING IT; THE MAIN PIPELINE ALONE CONTAINS ALMOST 1 MILLION

BARRELS. BECAUSE OF TRICKY CURRENTS AT THE HEAD OF THE PERSIAN GULF,

THE SPILL'S TRAJECTORY REMAINS UNCLEAR. IT MOST LIKELY WILL MOVE

DOWN THE CENTER OF THE GULF OR ALONG THE KUWAITI AND SAUDI

COASTLINE.
