DIRECTOR 494145

REPORTING INDICATES THAT AT

LEAST 70 AND POSSIBLY AS MANY AS 92 OF IRAQ'S APPROXIMATELY 700

COMBAT AIRCRAFT BUNKERS HAVE BEEN INTERNALLY DAMAGED; AT LEAST 15

HAVE BEEN DESTROYED.

IRAQ LOSING AMMUNITION IN KUWAIT THEATER

A COALITION ATTACK ON THE LARGEST

IRAQI AMMUNITION STORAGE AREA IN THE KUWAIT THEATER ON 28 JANUARY

DESTROYED 170 OF ITS 1,000 AMMUNITION REVETMENTS. COALITION

AIRSTRIKES ALSO ARE DESTROYING OR DAMAGING SMALLER AMMUNITION

STORAGE SITES AND DIVISIONAL LOGISTIC AREAS IN IRAQ AND KUWAIT.

REACTOR FUEL RECOVERY EFFORT

THE IRAQIS ARE CLEARING DEBRIS AT THE

REACTOR BUILDING OF THE TUWAITHA NUCLEAR RESEARCH CENTER, PROBABLY

FROM THE ISIS RESEARCH REACTOR. OPERATIONS TO SALVAGE THE HIGHLY

ENRICHED URANIUM FUEL COULD BE COMPLETED IN A MATTER OF DAYS.

ALTHOUGH THE BUILDING HOUSING THE RESEARCH REACTOR IS

EXTENSIVELY DAMAGED, THE REACTOR CONTAINMENT STRUCTURE REPORTEDLY IS

INTACT, WHICH SUGGESTS THAT THE REACTOR FUEL HAS NOT BEEN

EXTENSIVELY DAMAGE AND IS RECOVERABLE.
