IRAQ-KUWAIT: SITUATION REPORT

UNANIMOUSLY SAID THAT THERE WAS NO INTENT TO

EMPLOY CHEMICAL WEAPONS, AND THAT THERE WERE NO CHEMICAL

MUNITIONS ISSUED TO THEIR DIVISIONS. NONE OF THE COMMANDERS

EXPRESSED ANY MISGIVINGS ABOUT NOT HAVING CHEMICAL WEAPONS AND

SAID THEY REGARDED THEM PRIMARILY AS A THREAT TO THE POORLY

EQUIPPED IRAQI SOLDIERS.

SAMARRA

COMMENT: MAY INDICATE THAT IRAQ

TRANSFERRED CHEMICAL WEAPONS BACK TO SAMARRA SINCE THE CESSATION

OF HOSTILLITIES OR THAT IS IS PREPARING TO DEPLOY THESE WEAPONS

POSSIBLY IN RESPONSE TO INSURGENT OPERATIONS. ALTERNATIVELY,

MAY BE USED FOR SALVAGE OPERATIONS AT SAMARRA'S DAMAGED CW

AGENT PRODUCTION UNITS.
