COUNTRY: IRAQ

SUBJ: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON IRAQI MULTIPLE ROCKET

LAUNCHER CAPABLE OF DELIVERING CHEMICAL WEAPONS

AS OF 1990, THE IRAQI MILITARY HAD AN OPERATIONAL

MOBILE MULTIPLE ROCKET LAUNCHER SYSTEM WITH FORTY TUBES CAPABLE OF

DELIVERING CHEMICAL WEAPONS. THE ROCKET CAME IN TWO VERSIONS: ONE

WITH A RANGE OF ABOUT 20 KILOMETERS, AND A VERSION WITH A RANGE OF

ABOUT 40 TO 45 KILOMETERS.

THE OVERALL ROCKET WAS BETWEEN TWO AND THREE METERS LONG AND COULD BE

LOADED WITH A VARIETY OF MUNITIONS. AN IMPACT FUSE WAS MOUNTED IN

THE NOSE OF THE ROCKET.

THE BADR GENERAL ESTABLISHMENT DESIGNED MOLDS TO

PRODUCE CONTAINERS FOR CHEMICAL AGENTS TO BE PLACED INSIDE THE

ROCKETS AND SET UP A PRODUCTION LINE. THE CONTAINERS WERE MADE OF

TEFLON OR HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE (HDPE).

THE CHEMICALS WERE DISPERSED BY MEANS OF AN EXPLOSIVE ROD

WHICH WAS INSERTED THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE TEFLON CONTAINERS

EACH ROCKET COULD HOLD A TOTAL OF

ABOUT 13 KILOGRAMS OF CHEMICAL AGENT.
