SUMMARY: TYPES OF PROJECTILES AND MARKINGS USED ON
PROJECTILES OF THE [b.1. sec. 1.5.(c)] 48 INFANTRY
DIVISION [b.1. sec. 1.5.(c)] ALTHOUGH CHEMICAL WEAPONS MAY BE
USED BY THE IRAQI ARMY, INDIVIDUAL UNITS MAY NOT RECEIVE WARNINGOF
AGENT DISPERSAL. STANDARD OFFENSIVE TACTICS USED BY [b.1. sec. 1.5.(c)]
     48 ID.

TEXT: 1. [b.1. sec 1.5.(c)] 48 ID EMPLOYED 130 MM RUSSIAN
M-46 TOWED ARTILLERY PIECES AND FIRED THE FOLLOWING PROJECTILETYPES;
HIGH EXPLOSIVE, ILLUMINATION, SMOKE AND ARMOR PIERCING. (FIELD
COMMENT- WHEN ASKED WHAT VARIETIES OF EACH TYPE WERE USED, SOURCE
STATED THAT ONLY ONE KIND OF EACH TYPE WAS EMPLOYED. HE DID NOTKNOW
HOW THE ARMOR PIERCING PROJECTILES WORKED EXCEPT THAT THEYPIERCED´┐ŻBURST OR IMPACT TYPE. [b.1. sec. 1.5.(c)] 48 ID USED ONLY THE IMPACT
TYPE). NO IRAQI UNITS SOURCE IS AWARE OF USED TERMINALLY GUIDED
MUNITIONS BUT THE SOURCE HEARD [b.1. sec 1.5.(c)] THAT THE IRAQI ARMYHAD
PURCHASED 105 MM ITALIAN GUNS WHICH FIRE ROCKET ASSISTEDPROJECTILES.
PROJECTILES USED BY IRAQI ARTILLERY UNITS ARE MADE IN IRAQ, RUSSIA
AND SOME REPORTEDLY IN CHINA. OTHER THAN THAT, THE ILLUMINATION
SHELLS HAVE A FUSE PROJECTING FROM THE END AND THE ANTI-PERSONNEL
SHELLS HAVE A POINTED END. PROJECTILES CANNOT BE DIFFERENTIATED
EXCEPT FOR THE FOLLOWING MARKINGS; A WHITE CIRCLE INDICATES AN
ILLUMINATION CHARGE, A GRAY CIRCLE INDICATES SMOKE, ITALIAN HIGH
EXPLOSIVE CHARGES HAD A "S", "Q" OR "D" ON THEM, RUSSIAN HIGH
EXPLOSIVE CHARGES HAD A "Z" OR "Y" ON THEM.
2. CHEMICAL WEAPONS - [b.1.sec 1.5.(c)] 48 ID HAD NO
CHEMICAL WEAPONS OR PROCEDURES FOR RECEIVING AND HANDLINGCHEMICAL
WEAPONS. (SOURCE COMMENT - IF [b.1. sec. 1.5 (c)] 48 ID WERE UNDER
ATTACK BY ALLIED FORCES AND IRAQI REAR ELEMENTS WERE TO FIRECHEMICAL
WEAPONS AT THE ALLIED FORCES, I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT [b.1. sec. 1.5.(c)]
48 ID WOULD BE WARNED PRIOR TO DISPERSAL OF THE CHEMICAL AGENT).
COMMENTS: (U) SOURCE WAS VERY COOPERATIVE AND STATED THAT HE
WOULD ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS WE WANTED TO ASK. HIS ANSWERS TO
QUESTIONS ABOUT TYPES OF ARTILLERY MUNITIONS AND TACTICS MADE HIM
APPEAR TECHNICALLY UNSOPHISTICATED IN THAT HE KNEW GENERALLYWHAT
TYPES OF SOPHISTICATED EQUIPMENT IS AVAILABLE BUT LITTLE ABOUT HOW
THEY WORKED OR HOW TO EMPLOY THEM. SOURCE RELIABILITY CANNOT BE
DETERMINED.

[b.1. sec. 1.5.(c)]
